Another Summer Come & Gone...

Hey all!

I just looked back on my blog to see that I haven't given an update on YD in over a year! Crazy how that happens! At least there's a post in between then and now that gives you an idea of what my life has looked like the past year.

Although I have been working full time at the hotel, I have been able to take weekends and some time off to volunteer with YD this summer. As exhausting as it can be, I'm so thankful to still have the opportunity to serve alongside my YD family and be refreshed by what the Lord does in the lives of students there.

My friend Kiera getting a ride at the Roundup Fundraiser!
I can't remember everything I was able to be a part of this summer, but I'll provide a few highlights!
---------

Because of a car crash in March, I wasn't cleared to river raft until spring training was over. However, it worked out perfectly because I'm already certified on the Wenatchee and needed extra time on the weekends to finish my last semester of college. I was able to do homework AND shuttle drive for the river rafters!
One of my favorite shots of the spring! Got to take lots of photos from the shore and learn the ways of big cameras:)
Early in the summer, I was cleared to guide on the river again. It was definitely difficult getting back in the groove when I had lost so much muscle, but God is so good and provided some amazing days in His creation with the opportunity to share it with teens who rarely get to experience that combo:)

---------

Stonewater does a 12-day long trip called "The Leadership Pursuits" where students who desire to grow as leaders come. I wasn't a part of the trip this year, but was super excited when one of the guides asked me to design their tee shirt! Praise God that a student gave their life to Christ on the trip and others were able to experience the gospel in ways they never had before.

---------

One weekend, I got the opportunity to be food staff on a trip. I was able to get to know one of the new summer staff and we had a grand old time! I love being in a support role, helping my teammates who are working hard to gain relationship and experience with the students. Food is also super important to me, besides the fact it keeps me alive, I'm overwhelmed by the beauty of the gospel that it reminds me of (I could go on and on, so ask me about that some time).

On a Friday evening, I got a text from a guide saying, "You better come over this weekend. The girls are asking where you are and you have your own hashtag." This was the Edmonds High School varsity soccer team that came last year. Honestly, I didn't even think they liked me after I pushed them up Rock Mountain! So I went down to the ranch and enjoyed an evening by the fire and an afternoon of orienteering around the ranch. Although the trip's purpose was only to build team unity, as they asked questions about my life, we got into deeper conversations about identity and the inadequacy of putting hope in people.

Last weekend, I got to take an evening drive west to watch the team play a game. Super fun!

Overwhelmed by God's artwork
A couple weeks ago, I took some time off to co-guide a group of 6, 8th grade ladies from Kings School in Seattle. This has consistently been one of my favorite trips all 3 summers and by far it has been the best yet! Not only did logistics go smoothly, but the girls went above and beyond what I anticipated to push them toward. There were certainly difficult times when they didn't think they could do something, but they did. I was so very proud of them by the end of the week.

The most special thing about the trip was our campfire times. I don't typically expect a lot out of this age group for deep conversation and attention span, but like I said, they impressed and totally shocked me! I read them excerpts from a book called Hinds Feet on High Places. It is an allegory of a shepherdess who serves The Great Shepherd. She is crippled and disfigured. Her fear of people paralyzes her. After I read them the story (which the girls sat completely quietly through...not even freaking out about the campfire smoke in their face!), I asked them to think about what was keeping them back from living out a life that the Great Shepherd (Jesus) wants them to. We all wrote down our thoughts, put them into a hat, then took turns drawing each fear out. We gave "whoever's" it was encouragement and told them what we thought the Great Shepherd would tell her. So many wonderful questions and conversations came out of the discussion. It was amazing.
Meaningful campfire talks

I'm not kidding...

The conversation lasted two nights long.

On the second night of conversation, one of the girls had a question she thought might be off subject. "How many of you have been baptized?" Almost everyone raised their hand. She seemed a little embarrassed to find she hadn't yet, but went on to explain that her parents aren't Christians. She believes in God, but wants to make it more real. She wants to take steps to go to church and hang around people who will encourage her in her relationship with the Lord. Right away, the other girls started to figure out how they could go to youth group and church with her. They committed to making sure she would get to the places she expressed desire to be.

A highlight of the trip was summating Mt. McCausland (no clue if I spelled that right) above Lake Valhalla. One of the girls just sat there in tears because the beauty overwhelmed her. Also, when the chipmunks were going crazy around camp, some of them were blown away to hear that was a chipmunk noise: "I always thought that was a sprinkler!!!" And, my last favorite comment: "What's a bachelor's degree for anyway but to prove you're single?"

---------
Well, there you have a short snippet of my few days of summer with YD.

Honestly, writing this is for me to look back on to remember God's grace and faithfulness through this journey.

There were many other times I spent with YD this summer, I was just unfaithful in recording or remembering it.

Many students step on the property at Stonewater.

Pray that they will continue to see Jesus through His servants who live there and never leave the same.

"If you obey the Lord your God and keep his commands and decrees that are written in this Book of the Law and turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask. "Who will ascend into heaven to get stand proclaim it to us so we may obey it?" Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, "Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?"
No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it."

Don't know about you, but I'm sure looking forward to heaven!

Going from being in full-on adventure ministry to a job in the “real world”, I forgot to think about how my job related to the gospel. I always knew I had a passion for hospitality, mostly because I love to make people feel comfortable in unknown situations. I think that Jesus is the greatest example of feeding and caring for those without a place to go. However, it didn’t hit me until just the other night just how much my job echoes one small aspect of God’s redemptive story.

Normally when I go to bed at night, I hit the pillow and am gone until 7:30 am when my alarm wakes me up. The other night was different. I just laid there. Not much on my mind, just being still. Then a Bible verse came to me. Now I’m not one to over spiritualize things, but it really just popped in my head and I couldn’t shake it! It was Jesus’ words when He was bidding farewell to His disciples: “I am going to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2, New Living Translation).

Sometimes my desk looks like this
My days are full of walking up and down stairways, ordering light fixtures and towels, delegating instructions, finishing wood pieces, hanging up artwork, organizing the budget, and the list could go on. There is never a dull moment at my workplace and I’m so thankful to be working with the gracious people that I do…I certainly don’t deserve or feel qualified to have this position. There’s an amazing crew that works so hard moving furniture, organizing rooms, and flattening acres upon acres of cardboard. In record time, they have unloaded countless semi trucks of furniture in 100+ degree weather and forest fire smoke-filled air. To describe what they do in a day is kind of like describing a trip with students in the wilderness: next to impossible. (and would take up too much of your time…you’d have to be there!)

In two weeks, we have reservations walking through the doors. The dream is becoming reality. Boxes that we ordered last winter are finally being opened and some days it feels like the long awaited Christmas day when the pieces start to be assembled. Every day I get more and more excited to see just another part complete the work so many hands have made possible. When people ask what the rooms will be like, all I can say is that “they are unlike any other hotel room you’ve ever stayed in.” From hand-distressed wood and old family photos to beautiful artwork by a local artist, every single room has been hand-designed and thought through. (by the way, this isn’t me, the owners are the masterminds and have an amazing gift for design and structure!)

He's standing on a container full of cardboard!
Sanding the Fireplace Mantles
So, back to Jesus.

10 months into this project, I’m like a kid in a candy store…pumped and giddy and so excited to see what happens! (No kidding, I jump up and down and clap my hands sometimes). But Jesus has literally been building, designing, creating a place for us for 2,000 years!

I’m sorry, did you get that? 2,000 years.

Mind blown.

Also, Jesus doesn’t have a budget; extravagant is too little of a word to describe our future prodigal dwelling. He also doesn’t have to order furniture from across the universe. No need to call in the architects, painters, electricians, plumbers, tilers, dry wallers, carpet layers, finishers. He’s got it all under control. In fact, there won’t be any need for lightbulbs or lamps because He’s the source of light. We’ll get to eat newly invented fruit and stroll the streets of gold. Heaven’s technology advancement is too much for us to comprehend or even imagine now. There won’t be any flaws for it is perfectly measured and whole. It won’t be hindered by a fallen world. Why does this blow me away when I’ve recognized that He created the whole universe in 6 days?! Because I’m experiencing some kind of a glimpse of His heart for His children…and it’s taking him way longer to get the new heavens and earth ready!

I can’t wait to see people’s faces when they walk in the rooms for the first time. Actually, I’ve given some friends and family little sneak peak tours of the unfinished rooms and they’re already amazed. I feel like Jesus just gave me a sneak peak of His world this past week. He’s preparing a place for me to live for the rest of eternity and it’s going to blow my mind. He’s been working on it for 2,000 years and counting. It’s like He whispered in my ear, “You think this is cool? Just you wait and see what I’ve got for you to stay in!” Most importantly, He reminded me that whatever I’m doing can illustrate the gospel.

It’s not just my job that expresses kingdom work. I wrote this to share something I learned and something I needed to be reminded of: Jesus gave us a wonderfully diverse world with so many opportunities and experiences. Let us not loose sight of how those things are sourced from the One Creator, Inventor, Organizer, Teacher, Father, Servant, and Leader. “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31, New Living Translation).

How does your current job express a glimpse of Jesus’ Kingdom?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the end of this post I wanted to share a few verses describing heaven, but was so overwhelmed by Revelation 21 and 22 that I just had to share it all! It brings tears to my eyes just thinking about the way Jesus describes the new city: it’s not only beautiful for those of us who appreciate creativity, it’s also perfectly engineered. He gives numbers that prove it’s flawless build. If you have time, I encourage you to read this slowly and let these extravagant words soak in:
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.
I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, ‘Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.’
And the one sitting on the throne said, ‘Look, I am making everything new!’ And then he said to me, ‘Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.’ And he also said, ‘It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega-the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life. All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children. But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and al liars-their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.’
Then one of the seven angels who held the seven bowls containing the seven last plagues came and said to me, ‘Come with me! I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.’
So he took me in the Spirit to a great, high, mountain, and he showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God. It shone with the glory of God and sparkled like a precious stone-like jasper as clear as crystal. The city wall was broad and high, with twelve gates guarded by twelve angels. And the names of the twelve tribes of Israel were written on the gate. There were three gates on each side-east, north, south, and west. The wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were written the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
The angel who talked to me held in his hand a gold measuring stick to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. When he measured it, he found it was a square, as wide as it was long. In fact, its length and width and height were each 1,400 miles. Then he measured the walls and found them to be 216 feet thick (according to the human standard used by the angel).
The wall was made of jasper, and the city was pure gold, as clear as glass. The wall of the city was built on foundation stones inlaid with twelve precious stones: the first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were made of pearl-each gate from a single pearl!
And the main street was pure gold, as clear as glass. I saw no temple in the city, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. And the city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light.
The nations will walk in its light, and the kings of the world will enter the city in all their glory. Its gates will never be closed at the end of the day because there is no night there. And all the nations will bring their glory and honor into the city.
Nothing evil will be allowed to enter, nor anyone who practices shameful idolatry and dishonesty-but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
Then the angel showed me a river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. It flowed down the center of the main street. On each side of the  river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations.
No longer will there be a curse upon anything. For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him. And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. And there will be no night there-no need for lamps of sun-for the Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever. Then the angel said to me, ‘Everything you have heard and send is trustworthy and true. The Lord God, who inspires his prophets, has sent his angel to tell his servants what will happen soon.’
Revelation 21-22:6, New Living Translation
Hey there, everyone! It's been a long time since I've posted, but that's because of the eventful summer we have had here at Stonewater serving many teens!
Last post, I talked about the upcoming Father/Daughter Salmon River trip! It went well. So cool to see daughters and dads grow in their relationships with each other, try new things, and build new friendships in the other couples.
Here are some of the ladies of the trip.
This is me, my dad, and sister near a super cool waterfall!
After the river trip, we had a group of 60-ish 8th graders visit the ranch. We went hiking, rock climbing, and kayaking! It was a super amazing time spent talking about Jesus. My amazing co-leader, Carly, threw down the Gospel every evening. The girls were asking serious questions about life and relationship with God. They had an amazing leader that walked through the week with them and is walking through life with them now. She is so passionate about these gals and as we were saying our goodbyes, she said "The girls just need to be shown they are loved and that's what I'm here for." Please pray that they will either begin or continue their relationship with our Savior.
 After that, it was such a pleasure to have a returning group from last year! This middle and high school youth group has been consistently doing trips with YD for over 8 years! Some of the kids are super strong in their faith with Jesus while others don't know Him. We had some amazing and heart-warming moments on the trip as the students challenged themselves and brought up conversation about the Gospel. It was very evident to see the Lord break down walls and soften hearts on this trip. Praise Him!
The next week, I was able to be food and gear staff on the open-enrollment high school horse camp! The photo above is of me and Jordy when we wore our crazy pajamas to breakfast.
These ladies had an amazing week on horses, learning about how we are relational creatures created uniquely for a relational God.
The most amazing thing about this camp was that a student who gave her life to Christ in January (her story is here) was able to come! She had been attending classes at her church because she wanted to be baptized. Unfortunately, she never got the opportunity to be officially baptized and her heart was so troubled and burned with that desire all week. It was amazing to see how much she has grown in Jesus in just a short time. Her love for the Lord and change in her heart is so evident. I feel so blessed to have been walking alongside her during the radical change toward Jesus. Near the end of the week, she decided that she wanted to be baptized at camp! She asked me to baptize her, and of course I said, YES!
The next weekend, I was able to be a part of a team-building trip with the Edmunds Woodway hisgh school soccer team. The ladies are an amazing group of athletes quite dedicated to their sport and team. The first day we hiked for 9.5 hours. They ran to the summit and this photo is their victory celebration! I'm very excited to see how their team does this season.
We were extremely blessed to have a GINORMOUS wall tent donated to the ministry just in time for...
King's Armor Adventure!
The week was spent with 65 8th grade ladies on kayaking, hiking, climbing, and horseback riding adventures.
Tomorrow we will meet the 8th grade boys and do the same things!
Very excited! Please pray for the guys who are on this trip 24 hours a day for 4 days. They will be herding lots of squirrly boys, but our prayer is that the boys will hear about Jesus and the gospel will penetrate their hearts.
Here is my newsletter now that most of you have received a hard copy in the mail:)
Beginning with a Bang!
Summer has fully rolled into gear! I have had little time to write about what is happening here at Youth Dynamics, but that only means I'm spending my time with students, in creation, talking to them about Jesus! Here are some of the trips that have been happening and some highlights from them...
A handful of single day raft trips on the Wenatchee River.
Going down to the Oregon base to guide 3 days of rafting with them.
Being food and gear staff on a youth group trip that was based out of Stonewater Ranch.
Taking Arlington YD Community high schoolers on a Peak to Paddle trip: 3 days in the backcountry and 3 days on the river. We went over Abernathe Pass in the North Cascades & Kayaked on the Methow River after that.
After the Peak to Paddle trip, we jumped into one of our biggest trips of the year. It is through a scholarship program called Act 6. 63 students came representing 8 schools. They are put into small groups called cadres with other students who will spend the next 4 years going to college with them.
 The trip definitely pushed my comfort zone as I was the only guide for my cadre. I was very nervous to lead a hike through the backcountry alone, but it turned out fantastic and the students had great attitudes. I very much felt the peace of God as I realized that I was not the True Guide, but He was:)
 This week I was able to join a fellow coworker at a reunion for a trip she was on earlier this summer. It was really cool to hear the stories about the trip, and amazing to hear about how 3 of the students gave their hearts to Jesus during that week on the river!
This week we are prepping for a week long, Father/Daughter river trip! Although I'm very excited to see the infamous Salmon river for the first time, I'm more pumped that my dad and sister will be joining! It will be a long week in the sun, but I'm so looking forward to it! We covet your prayers as our team heads out tomorrow and we meet the dads and daughters on Sunday:)
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Training Highlights
Training came and went for the summer staff here at YD. It was three weeks of backcountry, river, horses, rock, challenge course, and other ministry-focused sessions. All in all, it was great! Although it was quite tiring, it definitely helped me get back in the groove for summer and build upon the skills I learned last year. Some highlights included....
4 days in the backcountry. Beautiful weather. Camping on snow. Playing in the snow. Having the opportunity to learn and teach backcountry skills with my team!
Rock Training. So fun and relaxed! We got some great personal climbs in as well as getting the opportunity to practice on climb and rappel stations.
We went night rappelling as well! So amazing!!!
Getting certified as a level 2 guide on the river. So now I can guide my own boat down the Wenatchee: the valley I grew up in!
God is so good and so faithful.
He has already taught me so much this summer.
I'm so excited to meet the students who are brought on adventure this summer!
