5.31.12
Rachel & Jessica
Now I am officially trained and certified in Wilderness Advanced First Aid! Friday through Monday held 9+ hours of class each day that included lectures & simulations inside and outside which prepared us to handle wilderness medical problems ranging from anaphylaxis to amputated limbs. The climax on Monday began with a 2 hour simulation of 8 hikers who experienced a severe lighting storm; the victims were spread all around the wooded knoll. The medical problems our team was faced with included deafness, broken limbs, diabetes, hypothermia, an amputated leg, & other crazy troubles. It was quite realistic, but our team got all the patients out and cared for in a timely manner. Great job, guys!
Jessica Climbing
Tuesday morning we set out for Icicle Canyon (in Leavenworth) to train for rock climbing. Some went through Rock Senior training which means they will be setting up our climbs and belays before we take students to the sites. I was in the group that trained for Rock Assistant. Our job will be to instruct students on helmets, harnesses, all around safety, & how to climb and belay. This morning we were tested on our competency of instruction, understanding of the systems, how we handle inattentive students, & our knot-tying skills! We got to go back home (the Ranch) this evening...after a few days of blood and sweat, it felt very good to wash up in the shower and put on some clean clothes:)

I know my knots!
Tomorrow we get our first day off since we started last Tuesday. After all this information, it will be good to get a brain break. On Saturday, training for guiding in the back country begins!
